Attention, acceptance and ... action!

Self-compassion is not the same thing as self-pity, nor is it the same as pampering yourself. No one is born with it, but you can learn it, says Kristin Neff, Buddhist and professor of psychology.

‘Embracing yourself is a really good idea. Just wrap your own arms around you’


Think of a past situation with someone that gave you an unpleasant sensation. Feel the stress it caused in your body.

Now say to yourself:
* This is a moment when I’m suffering
* Suffering is part of being human

Put your hands on your heart, feel the warmth of your hands and their soft pressure, and be aware of your breathing.

Now say to yourself:
* Let me be gentle with myself
* I accept myself just the way I am
