An optimal flow of life energy in your home, that’s what Feng Shui is all about. One way of bringing Feng Shui into your home, is looking closely at the elements. Do you need more wood, water or fire?

Feng Shui is an ancient philosophy based on the belief that your happiness is affected by your surroundings, and by the way you decorate your home. There are several approaches to Feng Shui. One of them is to look at your home focusing on the five elements.

From wood to water: find the elements in your home

Can you spot the five elements in your home, in shapes, colors or materials? Wooden furniture obviously represents wood, but so do plants. Potting compost stands for earth, and so does a russet brown cushion. A fish tank is water, literally, a painting of a waterfall symbolically. How do you feel about the balance between the elements?

Ideally all the elements are there, but your personal element should be taken into account. If you are a fire type, for example, water is not the right element for you to add, but plants are (“wood”). They feed you. It’s not a law, but it’s nice to explore and see how it feels.

What element do you need in your life?

Try to figure out what you need at this point in your life. Is it creativity (wood), energy (fire), stability (earth), success (metal), or wisdom (water)? Here’s an example. Say you want more energy, then try painting a wall or new home accessories in shades of red, burn lots of candles, or find a red summery bouquet. Well? Does it give you energy?

There’s much more to Feng Shui. In Happinez – Being in the here and now, you can find an elaborate article about the philosophy and several ways to bring Feng Shui into your home.
